Trademark Registration in Southern Europe: Italy, Spain, Portugal, Greece, Malta & Cyprus
All six of these countries are EU member states, so a single EU Trade Mark covers every one of them. Each also maintains a national register that remains available as an alternative for single-country protection.

This is the most straightforward region in Europe from a coverage standpoint: every country here is in the EU, so one EU Trade Mark reaches all of them. The variation is in national alternatives and in commercial risk profile.
Italy — UIBM and a crowded register
Italy is an EU member covered by an EUTM, with a national route available through the Ufficio Italiano Brevetti e Marchi (UIBM). Italy's register is among the more heavily populated in Europe, particularly in fashion, food and design classes — which makes Italian earlier rights a frequent obstacle for EU-wide applications in those sectors specifically.
Spain — OEPM, and where EUIPO itself sits
Spain is covered by an EUTM, with the Oficina Española de Patentes y Marcas (OEPM) handling national filings. Spain is also where the EUIPO itself is located, in Alicante — though this is administrative geography rather than legal significance: an EUTM is no more "Spanish" than it is Estonian.
Portugal, Greece, Malta and Cyprus
All four are EU members covered by an EUTM. Portugal maintains its national register through INPI Portugal. Greece administers national trademarks through the responsible government directorate rather than through its patent body, which occasionally confuses applicants expecting a single combined IP office. Malta and Cyprus operate small national registers through their respective government departments; both are common corporate domicile jurisdictions, which means locally-held earlier rights sometimes belong to holding structures rather than to operating businesses.
Counterfeiting and Mediterranean entry points
Ports across this region — Gioia Tauro, Valencia, Piraeus among them — are significant entry points for goods arriving into the EU from Asia. For a brand owner, that matters because customs recordation of an EU Trade Mark is enforced at the point of entry, and these are the points of entry. Registration without customs recordation leaves the most effective interception tool unused.
